Particularly useful in non-deterministic networks like Ethernet, this technology offers major cost savings in time distribution since it can be deployed using hardware clocks and Ethernet local-area network (LAN) hubs, switches, and CAT5 cables. This standard also can make Carrier Ethernet practical.

Google plans to upgrade its YouTube video streaming Web site to provide support for IPv6, a long-anticipated upgrade to the Internet's main communications protocol. Google already supports IPv6 with its Search, Alerts, Docs, Finance, Gmail, Health, iGoogle, News, Reader, Picasa, Maps and Wave products. Google's Chrome operating system -- whose source code was released this week -- supports IPv6, as does its Android platform for mobile devices.

ARP is used to perform Duplicate Address Detection by sending an ARP request in which the Target Protocol Address is set to the IP address for which duplication is being detected. In other words, to detect whether other nodes on the subnet are using the same network address, a node sends an ARP request for its own IP address. If a node sends an ARP request for its own IP address and no ARP reply frames are received, the IP address is unique on the subnet and is not a duplicate.
